Prepare for the GRE
Why are the GRE scores used and what is their importance?
GRE scores are one predictor of graduate school success. The scores provide common measures for comparing the qualifications of applicants and aid in evaluating grades and recommendations.
School Administration program applicants: The GRE "Information and Registration Bulletin" can be downloaded from the ETS website.
How often is the test offered?
The test is offered year-round, and most test centers are open five to six days per week. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Examinees should register early to get their preferred test date. Students can take the test through ETS once every 30 days*.
Which GRE test do I take?
The computer-based General Test, which is composed of Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing sections.
How should I prepare for the test?
GRE Powerprep® Software is a free download available to help examinees become familiar with the test. You may also choose to purchase products though a test preparation company.
What are the required scores for full acceptance into the Academic Partnership master's degree programs?
- School Administration: A total score of 800/1600 for Verbal and Quantitative sections combined is required.
- Teacher Leadership: Your undergraduate GPA x 200, added to your GRE score (V+Q), must equal or exceed 1350.
- The Analytical Writing score is not considered for acceptance into Lamar University's School Administration and Teacher Leadership degree programs.
Take the GRE right away! Scores take approximately 10-15 business days to be sent after the date requested. You will need to complete the test in time for your results to arrive to Lamar University before you have completed 2 courses (6 hours). You need to allow mailing and processing time, so plan accordingly.
Please refer to our academic calendar to view important deadline dates.

More information is available at the ETS site.
Are there any exceptions to taking the GRE?
Yes, a student may provide official transcripts for a conferred master's degree from a United States college or university, or an official transcript publishing a qualifying GRE score in lieu of the GRE.
What if I don't earn a minimum combined score of 800 while in the program?
A student will be required to take the GRE a second time. Please note that only one GRE attempt is allowed every 30 days by ETS. A student may not continue in the graduate program beyond 2 courses (6 hours) w/o a minimum score received or an approved appeal.
- School Administration program: If you do not meet the minimum score requirement on the second attempt, you may appeal or change to the Teacher Leadership degree (if the prerequisite formula is met).
- Teacher Leadership program: If you do not meet the formula on the second attempt (undergraduate GPA x 200 + GRE score = 1350) you may appeal.
- Find out more about the appeals process here.
